Discover the NSW Coast: A Road Trip Made for Wandering
There’s something undeniably magnetic about the NSW coastline. From wild headlands and turquoise bays to laid-back lakeside towns and winding river systems, this is a journey that invites you to take the scenic route – windows down, caravan in tow, and no rush to be anywhere but here.
Unlike inland drives, the coast constantly shifts. One day you’re camped beside a secluded beach, the next you’re lakeside at sunset or parked near a tidal river watching fishing boats drift by. The beauty of this NSW Coast road trip is that you can explore by region, settling into each area rather than rushing between stops.
We recommend allowing at least three nights per park to properly explore each region (of course the longer the better though!). This isn’t a trip to tick off. It’s one to stretch out.
South Coast
Dramatic coastline, turquoise water and quiet bushland camping

Stay at:
- Mystery Bay Campground
- Dalmeny Campground
- Moruya North Head Campground
Why you’ll love this region:
The South Coast is where the ocean feels untouched and the pace naturally slows. Think glassy morning swims, rocky headlands, and long coastal walks with barely another soul in sight.
These three parks sit close enough that you can base yourself in one and explore the others or move between them for different perspectives of this spectacular stretch of coastline.
Drive highlights & landmarks:
- Explore the art and food scene in Bermagui
- Swim in the crystal-clear waters of Blue Pool Bermagui
- Wander the historic township of Moruya
- Take in sweeping views from Montague Island (seasonal wildlife tours)
Spend your days fishing from rocky platforms, beachcombing, or simply sitting back as the tide rolls in and out. This is coastal camping at its purest.

The Hunter Region
Beachside energy meets lakeside calm

Stay at:
- Blacksmiths Beachside Holiday Park
- Wangi Point Holiday Park
Why you’ll love this region:
Here, you can choose your backdrop: rolling surf beaches or the calm waters of Lake Macquarie. Hunter blends relaxed coastal living with easy access to food, wine and vibrant town centres.
Drive highlights & landmarks:
- Walk the golden stretch of Blacksmiths Beach
- Explore sea caves at Caves Beach
- Catch sunset over Lake Macquarie
- Detour inland to the vineyards of Hunter Valley
Base yourself beachside for salty swims and morning walks, then move lakeside for still-water kayaking and slow evenings by the water. Two different moods, one easy region to explore.

Mid North Coast
River mouths, quiet beaches and classic coastal road trip scenery

Stay at:
- Diamond Waters Caravan Park
Why you’ll love this stop:
This stretch of coast feels spacious and uncrowded. Located near the Camden Haven region, it’s a perfect midpoint to slow down and soak in classic NSW coastal scenery.
Drive highlights & landmarks:
- Discover secluded beaches in Crowdy Bay National Park
- Take in panoramic views from Diamond Head
- Stroll the waterfront at Laurieton
- Explore nearby North Haven
This is where days blend into one another – morning beach walks, afternoon fishing, and evenings watching the sky turn pink over the water.

Northern Rivers
Laid-back river towns and lush hinterland drives

Stay at:
- Coraki Riverside Caravan Park
Why you’ll love this stop:
The Northern Rivers offers a softer coastal rhythm – riverfront towns, fertile farmland and subtropical scenery that feels worlds away from city life.
Set beside the Richmond River, Coraki is a peaceful base to explore both coast and hinterland.
Drive highlights & landmarks:
- Visit the coastal beauty of Evans Head
- Take the scenic drive toward Byron Bay
- Wander through lush Hinterland Villages
- Enjoy fishing, kayaking or sunset walks along the Richmond River
This final stretch encourages you to slow right down – longer lunches, early morning river mist and evenings that seem to last forever.

Making the Journey Your Own
The NSW Coast isn’t one single road trip – it’s a collection of regions, each with its own personality. You might choose to explore just one area in depth, or link them together for an extended coastal adventure.
Allow at least three days in each region to truly settle in. Stay longer where the ocean calls you back. Shorten the journey if time is tight. That’s the beauty of travelling between Kui Parks – flexibility without sacrificing comfort.
Kui Parks members receive 10% off accommodation across our network, making it even easier to extend your stay and turn a getaway into a true coastal escape.
Follow the coastline, take the long way round, and let NSW show you just how good the road can be.
