What’s the War in the Middle East Got to Do with Caravans? Everything… But It Doesn’t Have to Stop Us

By @WhatsUpWithWaz

I’ve been part of the Australian caravan and camping industry for more than 30 years.

I’ve seen it boom, I’ve seen it battle through tough times, and one thing I know for sure is this:

Aussies don’t stop travelling easily.

We adapt.

Right now, there’s no doubt we’re facing pressure. What’s happening in the Middle East, involving Israel, the United States and Iran, is pushing oil prices up globally, and we’re all feeling it here at home.

At the fuel pump.

And yes, that has a direct impact on caravanning.

But here’s the thing.

This doesn’t have to stop us. It didn’t stop us during the GFC, the Russia Ukraine war. The industry exploded during covid… and right now it might slow us, but it won’t stop us either… its likely the ‘safest’ and best holiday option for Australians.

Yes, It’s Tough, But It’s Not Game Over

Fuel is the lifeblood of the Caravan industry, let’s be fair most industries.

When it rises, everything flows on from there transport, manufacturing, running costs, and ultimately what it costs families to travel.

That’s the reality.

And while I do believe the Australian Government, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Treasurer Jim Chalmers, should be looking harder at ways to ease that pressure, because saying “we’re not considering it” (reducing or pausing the fuel excise) just doesn’t cut it when families are doing it tough, and in this instance ‘already doing it tough’…

We also need to look at what we as Australians and consumers can control.

Because caravanning has always been one of the most flexible and affordable ways to holiday in this country.

You just need to adjust how you do it.

Travel Smarter, Not Further

One of the biggest mindset shifts right now?

You don’t have to drive across the country to have a great driving or caravanning trip.

Some of the best experiences are closer to home than you think.

  • Explore regions within 1–3 hours of where you live
  • Take shorter, more frequent trips instead of one big one
  • Spend more time in one location rather than moving every couple of days

Less distance = less fuel = less cost.

Simple.

Free Camping & Low-Cost Stays

This is where caravanning really comes into its own and what makes it Australia’s best choice for a Holiday at the moment, and unique from any other holiday option.

Australia is full of incredible camping options, from discounts at established holiday park chains, Pub or Station stays, all of which tend to offer greater value for money than other accommodation types as well as bush camps to council-run sites. Even doing a mix of these can help you save money on any trip.

And when you do want the comfort of a park?

That’s where groups like well established Kui Parks with a fast and growing list of Parks come into play.

Their parks are independently owned, offer the full diversity of Holiday Park accommodation types, generally extra space and welcoming to the ‘caravanner’, full of character, and spread right across the country, often in unique and regional destinations you might not have even considered before, but have so much to offer.

And importantly right now, their Kui Parks ‘low cost’ Membership Card gives you real savings on every stay and that’s what’s important. That adds up quickly over any trip.

Fuel Savings: Small Changes, Big Difference

You’d be surprised how much you can save just by tweaking how you drive and where you fill up.

Here are a few that actually work:

  • Avoid hard acceleration, smooth driving uses less fuel (yes, I am talking to you my oldest daughter!!)
  • Keep your speed steady (cruise control is your friend) – strange that many people, especially caravanners, don’t use this feature – but it will help you conserve fuel.
  • Check tyre pressures, underinflated tyres burn more fuel on the open road.
  • Reduce weight, don’t carry what you don’t need. Weight has always been a discussion point in Caravans, just take the essentials!
  • Plan your route, fewer detours = less fuel burned

And then there’s where you buy your fuel.

  • Supermarket fuel discounts (like Woolworths or Coles) can knock 4–10 cents per litre off, over time that can really add up.
  • Apps like 7-Eleven Fuel Lock or fuel comparison apps help you find the cheapest fuel nearby and lock it in so you are ensured best price.

It might not sound like much, but over a long trip, all of the above can makes a real dent, real savings.

Rethink the Daily Spend

Here’s a big one.

A lot of people blow their budget after they arrive at their destination.

Eating out every night. Paying for multiple attractions. Buying convenience instead of planning ahead.

That’s where costs can creep in.

Sure, keep doing those things where you can, it will also help the local economy, but you can also:

  • Cook in the caravan, or in the park cabin, or use park BBQ / Camp Kitchen facilities
  • Plan a few “treat meals” instead of eating out constantly
  • Shop local produce and cook fresh
  • Pack lunches for day trips

You’ll not only save money, but you’ll also probably enjoy the experience more.

Free Experiences Are Everywhere

One of the best parts of caravanning? The best things in Australia are often free.

  • Beaches
  • National parks
  • Walking tracks
  • Swimming holes
  • Local markets
  • Scenic lookouts
  • Go Fishing!

You don’t need to spend big to have a great trip.

In fact, some of the best memories come from the simplest moments.

Budgeting Makes the Trip Happen

If there’s one practical tip I’d give anyone right now, it’s this: Plan your trip properly.

Set a rough daily budget across:

  • Fuel
  • Accommodation
  • Food
  • Activities

And stick to it.

Even a simple plan can turn a “we can’t afford it” into “we can make this work.”

The Industry Will Adapt, It Always Does

I’ve seen this industry come through challenges before, and every time, Australians find a way to keep travelling.

Maybe the trips are shorter.

Maybe they’re closer to home.

Maybe they’re a bit more planned.

But they still happen.

Because caravanning isn’t just a holiday, it’s a lifestyle.

Here’s the Bottom Line

The war in the Middle East might be out of our control.

Fuel prices might be rising.

But the Australian caravanning spirit? Well, that’s not going anywhere.

We just need to be a bit smarter, a bit more flexible and a bit more conscious of how we travel.

Because even in tough times… There’s still a big country out there waiting to be explored.

And we’re not about to stop now.
