TRAVEL – Coraki Riverside Caravan Park

ALISON HUTH ON KEEPING TIME WITH RIVER FOLK AT THIS ‘CAMPSITE ONLY’ CAMP

I really didn’t know anything about Coraki before we went there. It’s not a big place- well not any more. It used to be the main town in the area when the river provided the main form of transport. But, when road and rail took over Coraki, although it is sitting on the junction of the Richmond and Wilson Rivers, was one of the towns that just stopped growing.

Cast Out from Camp

We had one night in Coraki and stayed at the Coraki Riverside Caravan Park, a member of Kui Parks. It’s a really neat little park. There is one road running the length of the park. The powered sites are on one side, and the unpowered on the other. The unpowered are literally on the banks of the River, so you can easily throw in a line while sitting at your site.. We set up on a powered slab site and had a very peaceful time there. The Council has built a new amenities block, which is accessed from the pavement outside the park. That may sound a bit odd, but it works really well. The entrance to the park amenities has touch pad access, but there is another separate toilet there which is a public one for the locals and visitors to use. Very clever thinking there.

Campsite Only Camp

What I really like about this park is that it takes me back to the days when a Caravan Park was just that. A place to take your caravan and then just sit back and relax. There are no cabins here, it is just BYO accommodation. The park is really well maintained, and I loved the trees. As the park is just that, a caravan park, the cost of the sites reflects that. There are no bells and whistles here, just an honest to goodness caravan park. There is one other fabulous reason to stay here. Once you are set up, and if all you want to do is go out for a meal sometimes, get some groceries, call into a good bakery and pharmacy – all those sort of things – you can do it all without your car.

Walk To The Pub

Peter and I decided to go to the pub over the road from the park, literally a 100m walk. We had a lovely meal, and chat. That’s another thing I liked about Coraki, people were happy for a chat. We have put it on our ‘must go back list’ because we haven’t tried the Chinese meals at the Bowls Club, the pies at the Bakery or the Strudel at the Swiss Gourmet Food Bakery. Plus I just want to go back to the park with a good book or two. What bliss.
