Things To Do
The tiny inlet of Maaroom in the Fraser Coast region is nestled along the spectacular shoreline of the Great Sandy Strait, with stunning views across to the world's largest sand island, Fraser Island. Just a short drive south is Tin Can Bay, which is known for its visiting dolphins, which come in for a feed every morning around 7.30am. There is also an 18-hole golf course for those who like to practise their swing. In Maryborough, there are a number of museums, markets, a steam train ride, and the Fraser Coast Wildlife Sanctuary. You can have a photo taken at the Mary Poppins statue or take part in the annual Mary Poppins Festival in the winter school holidays.
If you enjoy researching your family tree, the Maryborough Family Heritage Institute holds one of the largest collections of genealogy records in Queensland and the Maryborough District Family History Society provides vital research resources for the genealogist. Not too far afield is Hervey Bay, from where you can travel to Fraser Island with all its attractions. The protected waters of Hervey Bay offer an amazing opportunity to watch the majestic humpback whales between late July – November.
Maaroom is part of a collection of quaint fishing villages dotted along the water's edge of the Great Sandy Strait. Let the pace wind back several notches by following the Great Sandy Strait Discovery Drive to these villages and surrounding national parks to discover coloured sands and sand blows, incredible birdlife, fishing and boating.
