It’s a Mystery No Longer! Discover Mystery Bay: A South Coast NSW Road Trip Gem

Mystery Bay NSW is a hidden gem on the South Coast, just 15km south of Narooma. This tranquil coastal hamlet offers pristine beaches, rock pools, whale watching, pet-friendly cafes, and the unique Mystery Bay Campground for caravanners and campers seeking a bush-and-beach escape.

It’s getting cold down south, so you have hitched up your caravan, or packed the camper, now which way should I go to get to the northern warmer climate this winter? The NSW South Coast has long been under-estimated as an attraction, a place to visit. It’s a highly diverse region with an exceptional coast line supported by beautiful regional landscapes.

New South Wales South Coast – Mystery Bay

While many travellers barrel up the Princes Highway toward the Queensland border (or vice versa in the summertime – purely to get to warmer weather!), there is a turn-off they often miss—one that leads to a place so tranquil and untouched, it feels like a secret meant only for you.

Welcome to Mystery Bay!

Only 15km south of Narooma, this tiny coastal hamlet is a treasure trove of turquoise inlets, dramatic rock formations, and ancient spotted gum forests. Whether you’re a “Grey Nomad” seeking a quiet haven or a family looking for a natural playground, Mystery Bay offers a rare blend of rugged isolation and easy access to some of Australia’s most picturesque heritage villages and towns.

It wasn’t always called Mystery Bay but it sounds and suits it better than its original name! Before 1880, the area was known as Mutton Fish Bay for its abundance of abalone. It was renamed following the baffling disappearance of NSW Mines Department surveyor Lamont Young and four companions. Their boat was found holed and abandoned on the rocks at Mutton Fish Point, with personal effects and even food still on board, but the men were never seen again. Today, a memorial stands at the edge of the bay, marking one of Australia’s greatest unsolved maritime mysteries.

Top 5 FREE Things to Do

You don’t need a heavy wallet to enjoy the best of this region. Here are five must-do activities that won’t cost a cent:

  1. Whale Watching from Mystery Bay Lookout: During the spring migration (September–November), this headland is a prime spot to see humpbacks breaching. Bring your binoculars and a picnic to enjoy the panoramic views of the Tasman Sea.
  2. Explore the Historic Velodrome: Tucked away near Corunna Point is a unique relic of the 1890s—a grass-backed cycling track used by early pioneers. It’s a fascinating bit of “urban exploring” in the middle of the bush.
  3. Rock Pool Hopping at Billy’s Beach: Take the short 1km return bush-to-beach trail to Billy’s Beach. It’s a peaceful spot with caves and natural rock pools perfect for a gentle dip or exploring marine life.
  4. The Australia Rock Photo-Op: Head 10 minutes north to Narooma’s Bar Rock Lookout. You’ll find a natural rock formation that has weathered into the perfect silhouette of mainland Australia.
  5. Step Back in Time in Central Tilba: Just 5km south, this entire village is National Trust-listed. While the cheese and crafts are tempting to buy, simply walking the historic streets and soaking in the 19th-century architecture against the backdrop of Mount Gulaga is a world-class experience.

Plan Your Visit

Mystery Bay’s strategic location makes it the perfect base. You can enjoy the “mod cons” of Narooma’s restaurants one day and the rustic charm of the Tilba valleys the next.

The best time to visit? Summer is perfect for swimming in the crystal-clear waters, while Winter offers crisp, sunny days ideal for bushwalking and watching the whales roll by.
