Mt Gambier Central Caravan Park SA.

One of the things we always look for in a caravan park is peace and quiet. But can you get that and access to great tourist spots if you want to be close to a city? Well, we were about to find out.
We made our way to Central Caravan Park in Mt Gambier for some basic needs and wants. We needed to do a big shop because we had crossed the border from Victoria and complied with the border issues on fruit and veg. I needed a chemist, and to my mind most important of all – I needed a haircut. I had been trying to get one for nearly two weeks but no hairdresser could fit me in.

We arrived at the park, saw the office and pulled into the park on the road next to the office. That’s not the best of ideas. The park is on both sides of the road and our site was on the other side of the road. So, next time we come, we’ll park on the road while we book in and then go to whichever side of the road our site is on.
We booked in for four nights and pulled into the drive through site. Their sites aren’t very big, the park was created when vans were smaller. I checked out the amenities, very good, very clean which is always a plus. I did wonder where the laundry was until I looked at the map. It’s in its own building next to the office.
Being so close to the city you would think it would be a noisy place, lots of traffic and general city noise. Not so. It’s very quiet and feels like a country park even though two supermarkets are within walking distance if you like walking 1km return walk!

Our first day there we did the shopping, found a chemist and I got a haircut. A very successful day.
After that we went into tourist mode and there is so much you can see and do here. The Blue Lake wasn’t really blue because it’s mainly blue in summer. However, it was still worth seeing. Plus there are other lakes, such as Leg of Mutton Lake.
You can take a day trip to Port Macdonnell. I’ve never seen such a rock invested shore line. The little town is lovely and has an outstanding mural.
The thing I really loved was walking down into a Sink Hole. The Umpherston Sinkhole is amazing and really lovely. I’ve never even thought of seeing one before let alone walking into it. And don’t forget to check out the Big Blue Blob!

Each day it was a real pleasure to come back to Central Caravan Park. There are 25 powered sites, 4 unpowered and 17 cabins. The 2 cabins are on the office side of the park have 3 bedrooms.
It’s a great peaceful park, gives you everything you want from a caravan park, plus close to a city and tourist hot spots.
