Kia Ora, Queensland: A Hidden Country Escape Where the Journey Is Half the Fun

There are some places you visit because they appear on every tourism brochure in
Australia. Then there are places like Kia Ora, Queensland.

I am being honest in saying that I had never heard of Kia Ora before I stumbled upon it
whilst travelling.

We were towing the caravan, following a back road, or taking the scenic route between
Maryborough and Gympie and we found it. Peaceful is an understatement. The loudest
noise you’ll hear is usually a kookaburra laughing at your reversing skills.

On our latest road trip through Queensland’s beautiful Fraser Coast region, we based
ourselves at Standown Park, part of the Kui Parks network, and discovered that Kia Ora isn’t
just a dot on the map. It’s a fantastic base for exploring some of South East Queensland’s
most underrated attractions.

Where is Kia Ora?

Kia Ora sits in Queensland’s Fraser Coast tourism region, roughly halfway between
Gympie and Maryborough.

Driving Distances:

  • Brisbane: approximately 220km (around 2 hours 45 minutes)
  • Sunshine Coast: approximately 160km (around 2 hours)
  • Gympie: approximately 45km (40 minutes)
  • Maryborough: approximately 50km (45 minutes)
  • Tin Can Bay: approximately 45km (40 minutes)

Its location makes it an ideal stopover or basecamp for travellers exploring Southern Queensland.

How did Kia Ora Get Its Name?

The name “Kia Ora” originates from the famous Māori greeting meaning “be well” or “have
life.”
Like many Australian localities, the area developed around agriculture, forestry and farming
during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The fertile land and reliable rainfall
helped establish dairy farms and rural industries throughout the district.
Today, the area remains proudly rural, surrounded by rolling farmland, forests and country
roads that are perfect for leisurely drives.
