Find Your High-Country Chill: Unearth the Magic of Stanthorpe and the Granite Belt!
This Granite Belt getaway begins in Stanthorpe, Queensland’s high-country gem. Stay at Tiny Away Escape for a relaxing base to explore Girraween National Park, local wineries, apple picking, and all the unique adventures this cool-climate region has to offer.
Do you live in the southern states of Australia, are you prepping the van ready to navigate the New England Highway as part of the great annual caravanning migration north? Or perhaps you’re a weekend warrior looking to swap the coastal humidity for crisp, mountain air and the scent of woodsmoke? While many travellers rush through the border country, there is a rugged, boulder-strewn paradise waiting for you just across the Queensland line—a place where the apples are crunchy, the wine is world-class, and the hospitality is as solid as the granite landscapes.
Welcome to Stanthorpe, the heart of the Granite Belt. At an elevation of nearly 1,000 metres, this is Queensland’s premier cool-climate destination. Stanthorpe is located in southeast Queensland approximately 217 kilometres southwest of Brisbane, It sits in the high-altitude Granite Belt region, just 56 kilometres north of Tenterfield and the New South Wales border. It’s a destination of four distinct seasons, where winter mornings bring a magical frost and summer evenings offer a refreshing reprieve from the heat. Whether you are a “Grey Nomad” taking the slow road, a family on a school holiday mission, or a young adventurer in a kitted-out campervan, Stanthorpe is the ultimate high-country detour.

Top 5 Must-Do Attractions & Activities
If you want the quintessential Stanthorpe experience, put these five at the top of your list:
- Girraween National Park: A short drive south, this is the “Place of Flowers.” Hike to the top of The Pyramid for breathtaking views or marvel at the Balancing Rock. It is a playground for hikers and photographers alike. Perfect for creating excellent calf muscles!
- Wine Tasting on the Strange Bird Trail: The Granite Belt is famous for “Strange Bird” alternative wine varietals. Visit cellar doors like Symphony Hill or Ballandean Estate to taste wines you won’t find anywhere else in Australia. Don’t mind if I do!
- The Christmas Farm: Open year-round, this whimsical stop is a hit for families and the young at heart. Feed the reindeer (sorry, Rudolph doesn’t live here but his friends do!) and soak up the festive spirit regardless of the month.
- Stanthorpe Berry & Apple Picking: Depending on the season, you can head to Ashbern Farms for strawberries or Eastern Colour for apples. There is nothing like the taste of fruit you’ve picked yourself from the rich volcanic soil. Fresh as fresh can be, couples and families alike will love this activity!
- Truffle Discovery Centre: Learn about the “black gold” of the Granite Belt. This unique attraction offers insights into truffle farming and a chance to taste gourmet truffle products. Personally, I’ve never had truffle! But I believe its fantastic!

Top 5 FREE Things to Do
Its always great to find excellent activities that don’t cost you a penny! Exploring the Granite Belt doesn’t have to break the bank. Here are the best ways to enjoy the area for free:
- Quart Pot Creek Walk: A stunning 5km network of walking tracks that wind through the heart of town. It’s perfect for a morning stroll or a sunset cycle – if you have a bike, take it with you, this is a great way to see the town.
- Mount Marley Lookout: Drive to the top for a panoramic view of the Stanthorpe township and the surrounding fruit orchards. There’s a telescope and great picnic spots.
- Donnelly’s Castle: Often called “the poor man’s Girraween,” this site features massive granite boulders and caves that were once a hideout for the famous bushranger Captain Thunderbolt (real name Frederick Ward!) was active mainly in the 1860’s. He was known for robberies, excellent horsemanship and being exceptionally good at evading police. It’s a great, easy exploration spot.
- Stanthorpe Regional Art Gallery: Located in the civic centre, this gallery hosts rotating exhibitions that showcase the incredible talent of local and national artists which I personally love to see and support!
- Wallangarra Railway Station: Visit the historic border station where the Queensland and NSW rail lines met. The architecture is stunning, and the history of the “break of gauge” is fascinating for history buffs of which I am one.
The Local’s Guide to Eating & Drinking
After a day of exploring boulders, bins of apples, Captain Thunderbolts hideouts and avoiding the police you’ll work up an appetite. Here is the “best of the best” in Stanthorpe:
- The Best Bakery: Brinx Deli & Cafe. While they do incredible coffee, their artisanal baked goods and gourmet pies are the stuff of legend. It’s the perfect place to stock up on sourdough before heading back to the caravan – and we know caravanners love a great bakery!
- The Best Restaurant: Varias Restaurant (at the Queensland College of Wine Tourism). For a sophisticated lunch or dinner, Varias offers “estate to plate” dining. The food is incredible, certainly was on my visit, and the view over the vineyards is unmatched.
- The Best Pub: The Stanthorpe Hotel. Known locally as “The Top Pub,” it offers a classic country atmosphere, roaring fireplaces in winter, and a menu of hearty pub classics that will satisfy any hungry traveller – oh, and beer, we like beer!
