The Ultimate Fraser Coast Adventure: Discovering Bidwill and Beyond
This Fraser Coast itinerary begins in Bidwill near Maryborough, with whale watching, K’gari trips, and coastal village adventures.
Are you planning your great escape to the sunny north this year? If you’re heading towards Queensland’s stunning Fraser Coast and let’s face it – who wouldn’t want to!, there is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered just 10 minutes from the historic heart of Maryborough. Welcome to Bidwill, a tranquil rural locality that serves as the perfect base for every kind of traveller, from seasoned “Grey Nomad” couples to adventurous families and young explorers.
Now, if I am being honest, I hadn’t heard of Bidwill until I accidentally came upon it last year.
At the centre of my experience was the Wide Bay Getaway Holiday Park or if you prefer an Eco Bush Camp, is a premier destination within the Kui Parks group. Spread across a whopping 161 acres of lush bushland, this park offered us a unique off-grid experience that combines the ruggedness of a bush camp with modern amenities. We wanted a peaceful retreat and that is what we got, and it acted as a great home base and launchpad for our coastal adventures,
Bidwill is literally where my (and now your!) Fraser Coast journey begins.
A Glimpse into History: The Legacy of John Carne Bidwill
Now, if you are like me, you love history and finding out about the destinations that I visit and the unique and rich past that helped the place become what it is in the modern era. The locality of Bidwill is steeped in the pioneering history of the Wide Bay region. It was actually named after a real person, John Carne Bidwill, a renowned botanist and the first Commissioner of Crown Lands for Wide Bay, who arrived in 1848. Bidwill was a man of science who established his home and a vast botanical garden on the banks of Tinana Creek, introducing exotic fruits like bananas and pineapples to Australia – so I guess we have him to thank for the Big Banana?!
Today, the Fraser Coast is best known as the heritage heart of Queensland and the world’s first ‘Whale Heritage Site. From the colonial charm of Maryborough to the pristine sands of K’gari (Fraser Island – Dingo Country), this region offers a blend of military history, literary magic (as the birthplace of Mary Poppins creator P.L. Travers), and world-class nature.

Top Free Things to Do
When I write these articles I like to list free things that you can do. Money doesn’t grow on trees, and it certainly lasts longer if you get to have fantastic experiences filling your days but not emptying your pockets.
- Maryborough Mural Trail – Wander the CBD to find over 30 large-scale murals that tell the quirky and serious stories of the city’s past.
- Urangan Pier – Walk the nearly 1km length of this historic pier in Hervey Bay for spectacular ocean views and the chance to spot rays or dolphins.
- Gallipoli to Armistice Memorial – A deeply moving and world-class memorial in Queens Park that traces the birth of the ANZAC legend, and you get to check out the park at the same time!
- Fay Smith Wetlands – Explore 10 hectares of remnant wetlands via boardwalks—a haven for birdwatchers and nature lovers.
A Must Visit: Whilst its not free, its highly affordable. The Maryborough City Whistle Stop is home to the iconic Mary Ann steam train where visitors get to enjoy a fun and unique ride on the train, totally only possible because of the many energetic volunteers whose passion keeps them running for your enjoyment! Its always best to call ahead and ensure the venue is open before you visit (as we found out) due to weather, staff availability or public events, but when you get there the Railway Museum, coupled with the riding on these heritage trains, all for only a handful of dollars, you wont regret it!
Local Flavours: Where to Eat – because we all have to!
No trip is complete without sampling the local grub. When you head into town from Bidwill, make sure to stop at these local favourites:
- Best Bakery: the area and surrounds are famous for local bakeries and treats, but for a classic experience, head to the Maryborough Heritage Markets on Thursdays for farm-fresh produce and bakery style delights!
- Best Restaurant: for me, the best restaurant was The Portside Café and Restaurant. It offered us magnificent views of the Mary River and a menu to die for featuring the region’s famous seafood which I am particularly fond of.
- Best Pub: This was exceptionally hard to pick. I mean, all pubs are awesome! But in this region we were lucky enough to get local info on the Maryborough Pub Trail.. yes, a whole trail of pubs. I reckon heaven would look like this! The area features several character-filled historic hotels. For a local atmosphere and a cold beer, the pubs in the Wharf Street precinct are hard to beat.
