Escape the Winter Chill: Discover Proserpine and the Whitsundays by Road
As I write this, winter has kicked in, especially in the southern states of Australia. I was in Brisbane recently for the Caravanning QLD Caravan Show at the RNA Showgrounds. Each day is was, for a Victorian, a balmy 21-22 degree every day and whilst I know its relevant to where you ‘live’ I did get a little sick of hearing the Queenslanders saying how ‘cold’ they thought it was!
So, as the southern states bundle up for winter, the annual migration to the warmer states is well underway, and one of my Favorite destinations is the sun-drenched town of Proserpine in Queensland. It beckons as a warm-weather haven for caravanners and road trippers of all ages and in a fantastic location with lots to do, but also a stones throw away from some of the best the Whitsundays has to offer.
Nestled in the heart of the Whitsundays, Proserpine offers a delightful blend of country charm, coastal adventures, and tropical tranquillity—making it an ideal base for exploring the region’s treasures.

Proserpine: The Heart of Country Hospitality
Proserpine is more than just a waypoint; it’s a destination rich in history and natural beauty. It also boasts its own airport by the way if you are looking for a fly drive option for your next holiday. A great place to start your journey in the region is at the Proserpine Museum, where exhibits showcase the town’s sugarcane heritage and pioneer spirit. It’s one thing to visit a place, but I always like to find out how the ‘place’ came to be in the first place.
For coffee aficionados, a visit to Whitsunday Gold Coffee is a must—nothing like a coffee with a view I say!
Families will appreciate the Proserpine Water Park, a free and safe attraction perfect for cooling off. Nearby, Cedar Creek Falls presents a picturesque setting for swimming and picnicking, especially after seasonal rains.

Airlie Beach: Coastal Adventures Await
Just a 20-minute drive from Proserpine, Airlie Beach serves as the gateway to the Whitsundays. Here, you can embark on a variety of paid experiences:
- Whitsunday Crocodile Safari: Explore the Proserpine River’s ecosystem and spot crocodiles in their natural habitat, which is kind of a must when in this neck of the woods.
- Great Barrier Reef Tours: Snorkel or dive among vibrant coral reefs and marine life, a trip up here would be a miss without this kind of activity.
- Ocean Rafting to Whitehaven Beach: Experience the pristine sands and turquoise waters of this iconic beach-and if you haven’t been to this beach yet, you have been missing out, its simply a must and a bucket list item.
- Jet Ski Tours: Feel the thrill as you navigate the waters around Airlie Beach and a great way to check out the area in a different way.

With its warm climate, welcoming communities, and array of activities, Proserpine and the surrounding Whitsundays region offer the perfect escape from the winter blues. Whether you’re towing a caravan or exploring by car, this destination promises memorable experiences for travellers of all ages. This part of Australia can get pretty busy between May – October each year so it does pay to book somethings in advance during these times, definitely Accommodation, but also some of the more popular restaurants should be pre considered to ensure you get a seat.
Caravanning Comforts
Proserpine caters well to caravanners, with the aptly names Gunna Go Holiday Park, part of the Kui Parks family of parks, offering powered and un-powered sites, cabins for the road trippers, pet friendly sites for those travelling with their furry companions. Tropically surrounded camp kitchen and pool area, manicured lawns and gardens, clean amenities, and a friendly atmosphere which encourages the all-important ‘Happy Hour’ which for me is a must!
Its central location makes it an excellent base for day trips throughout the Whitsundays region, with plenty of local activities to sink your teeth into including golf, a boat ramp, fishing, cycling tracks, Tennis, even lawn bowls, all of which begs the question, ‘are you gunna go?’ – you should! We love it!
