Things To Do
Smithton is the commercial centre of the North West Coast and the last stop before Arthur River, as well as the beginning of the Tarkine wilderness. There is a small shipping port in the town and boat ramps in the area. Fishing and lobster boats dock here. The secluded Seven Mile beach is about 11 km east where the fishing is mostly good and the water invites you to splash or paddle.
Alan Dale Gardens at Edith Creek is just 12 km away, where you can stroll around the rose gardens and have a cuppa. Pack a picnic lunch and visit Dip Falls, and watch and listen to the water cascading over the rocks. There are barbeque and picnic facilities as well as restrooms. The Big Tree is a few kilometres further on.
Breathe the world’s cleanest air on a spectacular guided coastal walk at Cape Grim, and tour Tasmania's largest wind farm harnessing the powerful winds of the Roaring Forties. Make a day trip to Waratah, a small, scenic town on the edge of the Tarkine wilderness with a rich mining past, a magnificent town-side waterfall and a unique lakeside setting.
For the adventurous 4WD enthusiast, the 128 km trip to Corinna is a must. At Corinna you may fish, cruise the river, kayak or just relax over a meal or drink at the ancient pub. To complete a full rounded tour you can take a punt across the river and continue onto Zeehan, before returning to Smithon via Rosebery.
